Don't Call Me Nancy Drew

It’s no secret that I love Who’s the Boss? I watched the episodes when they first aired, but I really fell in love with the series, and especially Tony Danza, when I was about fifteen. The reruns used to be on Fox Family. Anyone else remember Fox Family before it became ABC Family? Anyway, I watched Who’s the Boss? every day for a long time, but when the reruns stopped airing, I was heartbroken. I found a random website that was selling the whole series on DVD, and even though I knew it seemed shady, I went ahead and paid over $300 so I could still see Tony, Angela, Mona, Samantha, and Jonathan on a regular basis. To my surprise and disappointment, the episodes on the DVDs had been recorded from TV, so they were poor quality and included commercials, and some of the DVDs wouldn’t even play. I was so annoyed that I had been fooled by this company selling crappy DVDs that I set out on a mission to try to get some sort of justice since they wouldn’t refund my money. I couldn’t even get in touch with them anymore.

When I discovered an article from a Canadian newspaper where the company was supposedly located saying that the website had been ripping off a lot of people, I felt a little bit better that I wasn’t the only one who fell for the scam. The newspaper gave a number to call if anyone had any other information about what had been going on, so, of course, I called. When the recording on the other end was in French and then in English, I realized that I had called the Canadian Police -- The Mounties. Oops! Immediately, I hung up. I didn’t think I needed to involve the police in the Who’s the Boss? DVD scam. Surely, they had more important things to do. Plus, I was a teenager, so anything having to do with the police kind of freaked me out, especially police in a foreign country. So, that was it. My sleuthing days were over. I was out over $300 and no longer trying to help crack the case. Don't call me Nancy Drew. A few years later, the first season was officially released on DVD, so I snatched it up at a reasonable price. But, sadly, the rest of the seasons haven’t been released.

Now, I have to settle for hearing Tony Danza’s famous catchphrase “Ay, oh, oh, ay,” from the first season DVDs, the few episodes saved on my DVR from when the show was rerunning a couple years ago on the Hallmark Channel, and wait until another network decides to air it again. However, for the will-they-won’t-they magic that Tony and Angela had in every episode, that kind of chemistry can be found on Melissa & Joey, because let’s be honest, they are incredibly similar. And trust me, that’s a compliment. I’m loving this updated version of Who’s the Boss? because it’s exactly the kind of show I love.  And who knows? Maybe Melissa and Joey will get married at the end of their series. Tony and Angela got close, and I love how it all ended (I cry every time I watch Tony show up at the door asking for a job just like in the first episode), but I’d really be thrilled to see a different ending for Melissa and Joey. In the meantime, I love watching every week, and I really get a kick out of seeing all the similarities. And now, since pretty much every show is on DVD way before the series is even over, it’s safe to say I won’t be scammed trying to get Melissa & Joey episodes, and I certainly won’t be calling The Mounties.

Have you ever done anything foolish to see a TV show? Have you ever fallen for a scam? I want to hear all about it!

Love for Boy Bands: Then and Now

It was July 27, 2001. I was in Las Vegas, Nevada, standing outside of Sam Boyd Stadium for hours with my best friend in 115 degree heat. Sounds crazy, right? Who would do that? Who would risk dehydration, heat stroke, and who knows what else? What could be so important? Anyone who has ever loved a boy band knows the answer. My answer? ‘N Sync

Yes, I love boy bands, and back in the day, ‘N Sync was my absolute favorite. I had all the necessities of the boy band frenzy: posters in my bedroom, scrapbooks, VHS tapes of all their TV performances (I know, VHS!), their CDs, books about them, pictures, and T-shirts. (One of which I considered my “lucky shirt” even though I have no idea what made it “lucky.” I wore it so many times that it has holes in it now. I also used to wear it every New Year’s Eve thinking it would bring me good luck in the new year.) On that ridiculously hot day in Vegas, I was waiting in line to get into ‘N Sync’s sound check. Since I was a member of their fan club, I had special privileges (naturally).  My friend and I bought outfits just for the occasion. Mine included tie-dyed jeans from Old Navy and a tank top with a cowboy on it. I have no idea why I thought that was so cool. In case Justin Timberlake or JC Chasez chose us out of thousands of girls to whisk backstage, we wanted to look our very best.
The actual lucky shirt!

As anyone would have expected, nothing spectacular ever came from my love for ‘N Sync. I never met any of them, and certainly didn’t marry any of them like I dreamed about. The closest I ever came to meeting one of them was when my friend and I saw Danielle Fishel from Boy Meets World in Nordstrom. She was dating Lance Bass at the time. My friend said hello to her, but I was too star struck, so I stood behind a clothes rack. She said the guys were out of the country on tour. Bummer. But going to many of their concerts and just being a fan of theirs was really fun. Most of my best memories of my teen years involve them. Eventually, all my ‘N Sync memorabilia was either thrown away or shoved in boxes somewhere in a closet. My lucky shirt has been retired, and its only purpose now is to occupy space in a drawer. My dreams were shattered, right? Wrong. I grew up. When ‘N Sync faded away, so did my love for boy bands…or so I thought. Until now.

Last year, I saw a tweet from Lucy Hale who plays Aria on Pretty Little Liars that said her cousin was in a music video, and she included the link. I thought, that’s so cool. Hasn’t everyone wanted to be in a music video at one time or another? So, I clicked on the link, and I was introduced to One Direction. You’re probably saying, “Who?” Or maybe you’ve heard of them if there are teenagers in your life. They got their start on The X Factor UK in 2010 where they were mentored by Simon Cowell. After they came in third place, he signed them to his label. Now, it’s a British invasion! Well, British and Irish. Four of the guys are from England and one guy is from Ireland. They range in age from eighteen to twenty. At first, I went to YouTubeto listen to their other songs and see their music videos, and I was impressed by their real talent, but I resisted because I thought I was too old for boy bands. Then, I saw them on Saturday Night Live in April. After that, one night when I was procrastinating from writing my next novel, I watched my first One Direction interview on YouTube. These boys are hilarious! Between their accents and their wit and charm, I was hooked. I “liked” them on Facebook and followed them on Twitter. When they embarked on their Australian/New Zealand tour in April, I kept up with all of it through YouTube. British, Irish, and Australian accents! Win! It’s really cool that the fans are so dedicated and post so many videos and pictures for other fans around the world to enjoy. This is a definite improvement from the ‘N Sync days. Thank you, technology. And because of social media, the hysteria has intensified because fans can communicate directly with the boys. Since my new young adult novel includes the boy band phenomenon, I now consider watching One Direction videos “research.” That’s legit, right?

As we near the eleven year anniversary of that ‘N Sync concert in Vegas, I doubt I’ll be waiting in line in scorching temperatures for One Direction because I’m so mature now (insert sarcasm here), but I do have tickets to see their concert next summer. Some things never change, and in this case, I’m grateful. It’s so much fun to be part of the boy band craze!

Do you love boy bands? Did you ever do anything ridiculous to see your favorite band? Tell me all about it!

Book Review: I Couldn't Love You More

Thirty-eight-year-old Eliot Gordon lives in Atlanta with her partner, Grant Delaney, their four-year-old daughter, Hailey, and Grant’s children from his previous marriage, seven-year-old Gail, and teenaged Charlotte. Eliot and Grant aren’t legally married, but that doesn’t prevent them from being a connected, loving family. Despite everything good in her life, Eliot still carries a torch for her college sweetheart, Finn Montgomery, who moved to New York years ago for his career. When he shows up unexpectedly in Atlanta and Eliot runs into him, that chance encounter sends her life into a tailspin. Finn is married, but that doesn’t prevent him from flirting with Eliot, who returns his affection. They embark on a path toward adultery, but a tragic accident during a beach vacation alters Eliot’s life and her family forever.

I Couldn’t Love You More is a beautifully crafted novel. Poignant and heart wrenching, it addresses what it means to be a family, specifically what it means to be a mother and a stepmother. Relationships are tested and changed forever, and how the characters deal with these changes is what is so fascinating. The characters are well developed, and the story is richly detailed and intriguing, making this novel a page-turner. Eliot is realistically flawed and wrought with guilt over the tragedy. The pain she endures more for her family than for herself is honestly portrayed. There are touches of humor that help to lighten such a dramatic story. Overall, I Couldn’t Love You More is a captivating tale of family, love, loss, and moving forward.

5 Most Played Songs On My iPod: Week of May 14, 2012

Stand UpOne Direction Okay, I should start out by being honest. The whole One Direction album Up All Night has been on repeat, not just this one song. But this one has been played a bit more than the others. Why? It’s simple. When Harry sings, “You can call me a thief,” it makes me melt/swoon/smile, and I’m much older than the target demographic of this type of music. Just the way he sings it. I love it. I’m a huge fan of boy bands, and my love for them will be thoroughly addressed in a separate post. Or posts. Because you can never say too much about boy bands, right? Stay tuned…

We Are YoungFun. I was first introduced to this song when I saw the music video on Teen Nick. Yes, I watch Teen Nick. (Not too big of a surprise given my love for the Disney Channel.) I know this list of songs and the networks I watch could be considered embarrassing to some. But not me. I embrace the fact that my taste in music and television is still that of a sixteen year old. Whatever. Anyway, this song is just so catchy and a total anthem for teens/young adults. Oh, and the lead singer looks just like Mark Wahlberg. It’s like a throwback to Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. Well, not exactly.

Coming Up StrongKarmin Here’s another group that I first saw on Teen Nick. You’re probably thinking I’m like fifteen, but I’m not. I promise. After I really enjoyed Karmin’s single Crash Your Party, I did what anyone who wants updates from a band would do… I “liked” them on Facebook. Eventually, their EP Hello was released, and I immediately fell in love with Coming Up Strong. Number one reason: Nick sings by himself! Wait, let me explain. If you don’t know, Karmin is a duo: Amy and Nick (they're engaged!). Amy is the lead singer, and every song I had heard thus far featured Amy mostly and Nick just singing background vocals. Amy is fantastic, but I’m glad Nick finally got a chance to shine too.

Everybody TalksNeon Trees I just heard this on the radio a few days ago. And no, it wasn’t on Radio Disney! It was on the local rock/alternative station, and I knew I had to have it on my iPod asap. It has kind of a retro vibe, and the music videotakes place at a drive-in. Right up my alley.

Good GirlCarrie Underwood I’ve been a huge fan of Carrie Underwood since she won American Idol. Her singing is flawless. Every time I see her perform, I’m in awe. What a voice! I wish I could sing like her. (Side note: I actually can sing pretty decently, and I was in a girl group with two of my friends when I was a teenager. We wanted to open for ‘N Sync someday. Sadly, that didn’t happen. We got as far as playing one “gig” at a Holiday Inn and then disbanded. But that’s a story for another post…) As soon as I heard Good Girl, I knew it would be a hit. Carrie definitely knows how to pick great songs.

What are you listening to this week?

Nancy’s Top 10 Chick Lit Books

1) The Little Lady Agency by Hester Browne
2) Little Lady, Big Apple by Hester Browne
3) The Little Lady Agency and the Prince by Hester Browne
In the charming Little Lady Agency series, Melissa Romney-Jones decides to open an agency to help single men who need a woman’s advice and companionship. She doesn’t want to embarrass her family with her new business venture so she calls herself Honey, a more confident version of herself who wears a blonde wig as a disguise. Melissa/Honey is witty, charming, and very genuine. The series follows her adventures in life and love until she finds “the one.” The characters are what make this series so great. They keep you wanting to know more about them and keep you guessing as they take new, exciting paths. Hester Browne is a fantastic writer, and I’ve been a huge fan of her work since reading this series.

4) Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella
When Lara Lington is visited by the spirit of her great aunt, Sadie, her life is flipped upside down, and she doesn’t understand how or why Sadie is appearing. Lara and Sadie don't agree on everything, but they encourage each other and form such a strong friendship through a series of wild adventures. Lara is a quirky heroine who embraces being different. She will definitely make you laugh and cry while following her journey. Twenties Girl is British chick lit at its best.

5) Swept Off Her Feet by Hester Browne
Evie Nicholson is an antiques appraiser in London who loves the past. She visits Scottish castle Kettlesheer for a week to appraise the items in the home. When Evie meets heir Robert McAndrew, they don't exactly hit it off, but he might be just the right person to cause her to reevaluate what she truly wants in life. As everyone prepares for a traditional Scottish ball to be held at Kettlesheer on Valentine's Day, new relationships are formed and secrets are revealed that will change everything. Swept Off Her Feet is a delightful, engaging novel. Browne writes with such exquisite detail. The Scottish traditions, especially the ball, are intriguing. Browne expertly develops romantic relationships in all of her novels. Swept Off Her Feet is a whimsical escape to the Scottish countryside.

6) A Girl Like You by Gemma Burgess
Abigail Wood is single again after breaking up with her boyfriend of seven and a half years. She quickly discovers that she doesn’t quite know how to be single. Meeting and dating new men is incredibly stressful for her. After moving out of the place she shared with her boyfriend, she moves in with Robert, a friend of her sister’s fiancé. Robert becomes a dating coach to Abigail telling her what to do and what to say on all of her dates, which helps her relax. When Abigail falls for one of Robert’s best friends, unexpected feelings surface as Abigail tries to figure out who is really the right man for her. Author Gemma Burgess writes with such wit and charm. This novel is told in a fun, engaging way that makes it very hard to put down.

7) I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella
Poppy Wyatt is engaged to marry Magnus and loses her engagement ring, throwing her into a frenzy trying to find it. After her cell phone is stolen, she finds a cell phone that someone threw away belonging to the former assistant to business executive, Sam. Poppy refuses to give it back in case someone calls about her ring. A hilarious, unique way of putting two people together results. Poppy is endearing, upbeat and hilarious yet down-to-earth too, which makes her such a lovable character. Her quirkiness even extends to her ice cream of choice when she’s feeling down. She enjoys Magnum ice cream, similar to her fiancé’s name! Everything about Poppy is so funny and just so entertaining.

8) Something Blue by Emily Giffin
Something Blue is the sequel to Something Borrowed and is told from Darcy’s perspective. Darcy totally redeems herself in this novel, and actually becomes quite a lovable character. She moves to London to live with Ethan, and seeing their friendship grow is a delight. I love the relationship that develops between them. I love Something Blue much more than Something Borrowed. Darcy is hilarious.

9) Year of the Chick by Romi Moondi
Romi Narindra does not want an arranged marriage. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be up to her when her parents inform her of their plans, but they want her to lose weight before they find a match for her. That gives Romi time to find a mate on her own without her parents’ interference. But finding love within a strict time frame isn’t so easy as Romi discovers in what she dubs “the year of the chick.” Year of the Chick is a hilarious, lighthearted novel about self-discovery amidst the standards set by others and pursuing true happiness no matter what anyone else thinks. It is full of wit and very realistic situations. The characters are portrayed with such honesty and familiarity that they seem like real people. Romi’s sense of humor is the best part of this novel. A charming, very enjoyable read.

10) With A Little Luck by Caprice Crane
Radio DJ Berry Lambert is searching for answers and being superstitious is her way of making sense of what happens in her life. Berry has a great sense of humor. When she partners with another DJ, Ryan, for a new morning show, sparks fly. I loved the banter between them, and they are such a great pair, but obstacles that come their way keep you guessing how it will all turn out until the very end. Fresh, funny dialogue, and well-developed characters make this book a winner.
